The Israeli journalist, Amira Hass, has today received the first Anna Lindh Award of SEK 250,000.
”We are truly happy to have such an outstanding receiver of our first award”, says Ingvar Carlsson, Committee Chairman of the Anna Lindh Memorial Fund and former Prime Minister of Sweden.
The committee´s citation pinpoints her daring work as a reporter in a bitter conflict:
“ In her courageous reporting from the West Bank and Gaza, Haaretz journalist Amira Hass contributes to a better understanding of Palestinian life under Israeli occupation. By informing the Israeli public about everyday life in Palestine, she helps creating conditions for a meaningful dialogue.”
Amira Hass lives in and reports from the West Bank and Gaza for the Israeli daily newspaper, Haaretz. Her fearless style and ability to critically examine both the Israeli and Palestinian sides have made her name well-respected and her reports read by the Israeli military as well as peace activists.
“Being on the spot is vital for my work. That’s what makes it possible to see and describe the developments in the society that I write about. By living here I can gain a sociological understanding of the fundamental reasons for phenomena such as suicide bombers.”
Her reports are harshly critical of the Israeli occupation. But she does not hesitate to criticise Palestinian organisations. Consequently not everyone reads her work with approval, but that’s also how she has achieved respect and become renown as a journalist.
Additional awards
Besides the main award to Amira Hass, a further three development awards, each worth SEK 25,000, go to:
Ladyfest in Stockholm and Malmö.
Citation: With fervent commitment, a go-ahead spirit and a feeling for young, contemporary culture, Ladyfest personifies the new feminism. By providing role models and arenas for self-expression, Ladyfest encourages young women to take up their place and overcome prejudices within the spheres of art and popular culture.
The Faculty Ambassadors in Lund.
Citation: With a vision of political equality, students from the Lund University Law Faculty have taken an active interest in schoolchildren, who traditionally cannot or do not dare to seek out the academic world. Their enthusiasm has encouraged many students to become involved and has meant that youngsters with different prerequisites have ventured beyond cultural and class-distinction borders to further their studies.
